Wedding Plans

Forty years ago, Beth made the hardest decision of her life. On the day she was supposed to marry Andy, she walked away from the man she loved and the life everyone expected her to choose. With a dream job in New York City too compelling to ignore, she left him standing at the altar, never expecting him to forgive her or to see him again.

After a successful publishing career, Beth has moved to Rehoboth Beach in search of a quieter, simpler life, even as the town brings back memories of Andy. When their lifelong friends announce they’re getting married, the two are suddenly thrown together for a wedding neither can escape.

Andy has never truly forgiven the woman who shattered his heart. Beth never stopped wondering what if: if achieving her career dreams was worth losing the love of her life. As the wedding draws near, old hurts give way to new understanding. Old sparks rekindle. Now, in their early sixties, they’ll have to decide whether the past has already written their ending, or whether love deserves one more chance.

THE STORY

Will Katherine overcome her husband’s betrayal and have the courage to trust her heart?

Reeling from her husband’s cheating and demand for a divorce after 37 years, Katherine, a 61-year-old English professor, retreats to Rehoboth Beach, where she always finds comfort and peace, to regroup and think about her new future.

On a whim, she decides to spend her sabbatical at the beach, writing and working in her favorite bookstore. As Katherine navigates the challenging waters of newfound freedom, she finds support and inspiration from a group of successful female entrepreneurs also in their sixties, true friends who encourage her to live her dreams.

Even though she’s not interested in a relationship, two men vie for her attention. She can’t deny the attraction she feels for Jeff, despite his tattoos, motorcycle, and ponytail. He’s the exact opposite of Richard: suave, sophisticated, a real gentleman who would fit right into her academic world.

WHERE THE BOOKS ARE SET

Deborah’s Rehoboth

Many people ask if the places in the books are real, and by and large they are. They’re the places my family and I go back to over and over. We first brought our boys when they were three and four, on a cold Memorial Day weekend, in yellow rain slickers and yellow dishwashing gloves so they could dig in the sand. We’ve been coming back ever since, in every season.

Where to find the Savvys (and us):

Grotto Pizza. Our first-night tradition.

Victoria’s at the Boardwalk Plaza. Sit outside at the wrought-iron tables like Beth and Andy, even when it’s cool; there are heaters. Don’t miss the parrots in the lobby.

Blue Moon. One of our first tastes of Rehoboth. They cooked plain buttered pasta for our finicky toddlers so we could enjoy our dinner.

Eden. Our special-occasion restaurant. Love the filmy booth dividers.

Ava’s Pizza and Wine Bar. Where the Savvys argue over the wine list (and the homemade potato chips).

Browseabout Books. Where Beth works, and where you’ll find Deborah signing on November 14.

Rise Up Coffee. Organic, fair-trade coffee, and the Marys & Margs bar.

Coming next

More of the Savvys’ stories are on the way. Next up: Isabella’s story. She owns a brewery in Rehoboth, and for twenty years she’s met the man she loves once a year, at a conference on the other side of the country.
